Winter the season of Water
Winter is the season of the Water element in Chinese medicine.
A time when nature slows right down. The trees are bare, the days are shorter and there’s much less happening on the surface.
We’re not always very good at slowing down. There’s usually something else to do, something to plan, something to achieve or something we feel we should be keeping up with.
But winter gives us a different invitation: pause for a while.
There is something restorative about allowing ourselves to be quieter and less busy. Not necessarily doing nothing, but creating enough space to notice what’s actually going on beneath the surface.
Think about a seed sitting in the cold, dark soil. From the outside, it looks like nothing is happening. But underneath, it’s holding everything it needs for the right time to come.
Just because we're not visibly doing or achieving something doesn't mean nothing is happening. Sometimes rest is part of the process. Sometimes the most useful thing we can do is give ourselves enough space for things to settle.
Winter can also be a good time to look back. Rather than rushing straight into the next year with a list of things we want to change, perhaps we could pause and ask ourselves what we've actually learned.
What worked? What didn't? What surprised us? What do we want to take with us, and what are we ready to leave behind?
There doesn't have to be a neat answer. Taking time to reflect can simply help us make sense of what we've experienced in a way that feels meaningful to us.
The Water element is often associated with wisdom, and I think there’s something important in that. Wisdom doesn't always come from knowing more. Sometimes it comes from becoming quiet enough to hear what we already know.
So perhaps winter isn't a season to resist against. Perhaps it's a chance to slow down, restore, reflect and trust that not everything needs to happen right now.
Some of the best things need time!
